As we ended last week’s column, I was on the way to the Vintage when I stopped to help Brian Ach and his wife, Michelle, in Winchester, Virginia. The day before, Brian’s 1973 2002tii had begun running rough, like a cylinder wasn’t firing, and he wasn’t sure if he could make it the remaining 300 miles to Winston-Salem.

Betty and I are leaving on a road trip today. We’re headed for Asheville, North Carolina, to attend the first ever Classics At The Biltmore—a Concours d’Elegance hosted by the BMW CCA Foundation.

Some of you may be wondering why I haven’t written about my annual pilgrimage to the Vintage, the wonderful “a gathering, not a car show” that occurs annually around Memorial Day in Winston-Salem and traditionally occupies several columns and feature articles. Let me say that there is a Story. Oh, is there ever a Story! It just didn’t have the ending I wanted. And so I forced the Story to reboot itself until it bent to my iron will.

When he built the largest private home in America, George W. Vanderbilt laid the groundwork for what became the U.S. Forest Service as well, with architect Frederick Law Olmsted creating a park of 125,000 acres of timberland, with 25 acres reserved for the gardens of Biltmore House. While Vanderbilt referred to it is “my little mountain escape,” by the time the house was finished in 1895, its living area exceed 135,000 square feet.

The week before last, I walked up to the water’s edge with my 2001 E46 325xiT wagon. The work had begun innocently enough six weeks ago, when I noticed that the front axle boots were ripped, but a snapped pinch bolt and a decision to replace struts and tower mounts caused it to slide part way down the slippery slope.
