Once upon a time, in a land far, far away, a young man acquired a glorious new steed—a fiery red icon of conveyance. The youth came to know his new mount as they traveled over hills and rivers, exploring strange and wonderful new lands. They crossed a vast ocean and two continents to live together for many years in an area with blissfully perfect weather, before opportunity pulled them into a world of many climates. Humidity and snow took their toll, but the two wore their time and scars well.

Last week I began my new 26-part series “Why Do I Never Learn The Cheapskate Lesson.” It will take 26 parts, because I will continue to do this over and over and over.

Each time I describe myself as a BMW of North America/IHG Rewards Club driver, I can’t help but think, Is this real? To say that I am thankful to have support from such huge and well-respected companies is just a fraction of the way I actually feel. Having worked extremely hard to get to where I am today—and to have them behind me—is a gift.

Why do I never learn my lesson about being an impatient cheapskate, and instead wind up having to fix things three times? Last week, when I said that I would begin my new 26-part series “Why Do I Never Learn Lessons About Being An Impatient Cheapskate And Instead Wind Up Having To Fix Things Three Times,” you probably thought I was kidding. Well, perhaps exaggerating; 26 parts is probably too fine a grain. I think I can knock the gist of it off in one column.

First rule for going to the race track: Don’t take a car that you can’t walk away from—financially and mentally. Although I am finally to the point where I could walk away from my M3 financially, even though it would be quite a loss, I don’t think I would be able to walk away from it mentally. The history behind the car and how it has become a part of my life is too great, and I am sure that I would shed quite a few tears if something happened to it.
