Owners of 2016 BMW 2 Series, 2016 BMW X1s, and 2016 BMW X6s are happier with their new Bimmers than owners of other makes in their class, according to JD Power. 2016 Mini Clubman owners also joined the party at the top of their segment as well.

The annual JD power Automotive Performance, Execution, and Layout (APEAL) Study examined owner and lessee satisfaction with the design, performance, features, and layout of new vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership or lease. The study used owner responses to 90 individual vehicle attributes to measure their satisfaction. About 80,150 new vehicle owners and lessees participated in the study, which looked at cars, trucks, sport utility vehicles, and vans.

The vehicles were assigned in 25 segments. The BMW 2 Series was rated best for overall appeal in the Small Premium Car category for 2016. Owners of the redesigned 2016 BMW X1 Sports Activity Vehicle voted it to the top of Small Premium SUV segment.

The BMW X6 Sports Activity Coupe has not only grown in sales and popularity, but also in owner satisfaction, as evidenced by it’s top ranking in the Midsize Premium SUV class. By the way, finishing right behind the X6 was the 2016 BMW X5.

BMW Group’s Mini division released a newer, larger Mini Clubman for 2016. New owners have taken to the largest Mini ever with its five doors and seating for five people, and their responses to the study ranked the new Clubman as best in the Compact Car category.

The BMW 4 Series and BMW 3 Series finished second and third behind the Lexus in the Compact Premium Car segment.

The BMW X4 was next behind the Porsche Macan in the Compact Premium SUV category, with the BMW X3 in fourth.

In the Midsize Premium Car segment, the BMW 5 Series, which is nearing the end of its life cycle, was fourth among the nine contenders.

Other German cars that made it to the top of their respective categories included the Audi A6, Porsche 911, Porsche Boxster, and Porsche Macan. Notably absent from the category toppers were entries from Daimler, except for the SmartFortwo.

The JD Power APEAL study concluded that new or redesigned vehicles in their launch year scored on average, 29 points higher on a 1,000-point scale that in the year before their redesign.

It’s nice to see many BMW models made a very good impression on their new owners in the first three months of their relationships. But then, we expected no less.—Scott Blazey
