Each year, San Diego's North Island Naval Air Station on Coronado Island opens the doors to its airport runway for the Coronado Speed Festival, an annual vintage-racing event. The "race on the base" is one of the marque events for San Diego's Fleet Week, and continues to grow every year—and this year the San Diego Chapter's marque corral became a BMW CCA regional event, drawing in neighboring members and selling all 150 car-corral passes in record time! The chapter enjoyed a very large presence right next to all of the action, thanks to the support of its volunteers and members.
The San Diego County BMW Dealers' Association provided several new BMW M cars for hot-lap rides between the races, again calling on some of the chapter's best driving instructors to pilot these new beasts! (Yes, that was Executive Vice President Steve Johnson at the wheel of a new M5!) At the end of every race, fans were allowed to climb in and hold on as they were whisked around the track in impressive style. And this year BMW NA brought a special treat—their BMW Classic Motorsport trailer! But the historic BMWs weren't just there for display; Bill Auberlen hit the track in his old E92 M3 GT2 and gave rides to a few lucky attendees.
Watch as Steve Johnson, our Executive Vice President, takes you for a couple laps of the Coronado Speed Festival circuit in a BMW M5.
We would like to thank all the volunteers from the San Diego Chapter as they did an amazing job representing the club!—Nate Risch
