No one plans on being in an automobile accident, but it can be comforting to know that your new BMW 5 Series is engineered to keep you as safe as possible if the unthinkable does happen. The new G30 BMW 5 Series Sedan recently receive the coveted Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), as a result of crash-test results in five different tests, as well as a "Good" rating for headlights and a "Superior" rating for optional front-crash protection.

The IIHS praised the new 5 Series for its body and structure design in the small overlap front crash test, in which the driver's space experienced only five inches of intrusion in the footwell area. The IIHS was also impressed by the car's available Frontal Collision Warning with either City Collision Mitigation or with Extended Collision Mitigation, which avoided collisions during testing at 12 mph and 25 mph.

All this protection comes with a roomier interior in a car that weights 137 pounds less than its predecessor and incorporates standard driver assistance and safety systems that may keep the car out of accidents in the first place, such as Dynamic Stability Control, Brake Dry Assist, Cornering Brake Control and Dynamic Traction Control, and optional features such as Blind Spot Detection, Daytime Pedestrian Protection, Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limit Info, Cross-traffic alert, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side collision avoidance, Traffic Jam Assistant, and Evasion Aid.

No car can guarantee its occupants will be completely safe in all conditions and in any accident. But between the crash protection and mitigation engineered into the car, the standard safety and driver assistance features, and the optional semi-autonomous driving functions, the new 5 Series could be one of the safest BMWs yet. We would not want to put it to the test, but there is some comfort in knowing that the IIHS has and the car came out with the highest rating.—Scott Blazey
