In the BMW racing world, few cars are more easily identified than those prepared by Turner Motorsport. Longtime Club member Will Turner founded the company in 1993 to provide BMW owners with high-quality parts and accessories. Since 2003, the blue and yellow Turner racing M3s, 3 Series, and Z4 BMWs have regularly made the podium and in fact have won championships in Speed World Challenge, Grand-Am Cup, Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge, and most recently, in Tudor United SportsCar.

Turner Motorsport is now putting its colors, and it’s own special touches, on the BMW that has set the automotive world on fire over the past year: the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.

The BMW i8 has won so many awards that we have lost count of the number. We do remember the numbers that count, however. Like a total of 357 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque from its combined electric and gasoline internal combustion motors, and its zero to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds

As great as the i8 looks and as well as it performs, Turner believes it can be much more in both categories. Turner’s web site explains, “As part of our DNA and what makes Turner what it is today, we are always striving to push the envelope to improve performance, aesthetics, and the overall driving experience of any and all BMWs. The i8 is no different, thus the Turner Project i8.“

Turner has made a name by tuning BMW suspensions, so that’s where it started on the i8. Special sport springs from H&R increase the spring rate and lower the car and its center of gravity. New camber adjustment arms allow a bit more negative camber in front to reduce the i8’s natural understeer.

If you like the classic Turner Motorsport blue and yellow livery—and we do— you’re going to love the looks of the Project i8 in its new wrap.

Next? Well, we don’t know what’s next—yet—because Turner’s BMW i8 is an ongoing project. We’re looking forward to the updates. You can follow them at http://www.turnermotorsport.com/t-project-i12-i8.aspx.—Scott Blazey
