Even though BMW has been trying to fill every void in their lineup—even creating whole new categories—they have left a big hole open here in the United States. There is no true BMW hatchback offered from BMW USA (unless you count the 4 Series Gran Coupé). They do sell one to the rest of the world though, and the 1 Series was recently updated with a great new look.
I guess BMW USA has figured that if you want a hatchback, you can look at the MINI brand. But for most BMW enthusiasts, they want the Ultimate Driving Machine—thus if they have to look at another brand, might as well look at the VW Golfs and Audi A3s too.
