BMW News

Many of us think that a great many BMWs are works of art, in and of themselves. Some we would call downright masterpieces. The 328, the 507, the M1, the i8, and more than a few BMW concept cars would fall into this category. And that’s not counting the BMW Art Cars, which are bonafide creations of real artists, including some giants of the art world, like Calder, Warhol, and Lichtenstein.

Producing beautiful cars is not enough for BMW, which has a very strong commitment to cultural awareness and fostering the arts around the world. Its partnership with this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach is one such endeavor. From December 3 through 6, the famous art fair will take place again with support from BMW.

More than 260 of the leading galleries from North America, Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia will show modern and contemporary art along with new pieces by emerging artists. BMW will provide official VIP shuttle services, primarily using its new 7 Series. On December 2, BMW will host a VIP reception to present its art initiative “BMW Art Journey.” The BMW Art Journey is a project that offers selected young artists the opportunity to travel to the worldwide location of their choice.

It’s an art fair, so BMW usually brings along an Art Car. This year visitors to the Collectors Lounge may view the BMW 730i Art Car painted by César Manrique in 1990. Being passionate about the environment, Manrique designed an Art Car the represents the harmony of technology and nature.

Speaking of BMW Art Cars, 2015 is the 40th anniversary of the first Art Car—Alexander Calder’s 3.0 CSL. By 2017 there will be two more. BMW commissioned works from Chinese artist Cao Fei and American artist John Baldessari. Their canvas will be the BMW M6 GT3, which will eventually be shown in museums and like the first Calder Art Car, will also venture onto the racetrack.

The 2015 Art Basel Miami Beach will be in the Miami Beach Convention Center. More information may be found at http://www.artbasel.com.—Scott Blazey
