BMW News

BMW debuted the refreshed 6 Series earlier this month at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, Michigan. Even though the “new” 2015 6 Series is still of the F12/F13 variety which premiered in 2010 as a 2011 model, BMW made a big deal of showing off its mid-model-life facelift. In a rare move, BMW brought 6 Series cars to the NAIAS that represented the entire 6 Series model line: The Coupe, the Convertible, the Gran Coupe, and the M6. Normally the Convertible and the M version maintain a respecful premiere distance of a few months or even longer, but in Detroit, we saw them all at the same time.

The M6’s facelift features restyling tweaks in the front and back, new wheels, and standard LED headlights, and there’s no question—it’s a handsome car.

The M6 Coupe carries the heritage of its predecessors well, but then there’s the M6 Gran Coupe. We could be accused of being purists when it comes to appreciating the direct descendants of BMW’s Big Coupes—the 3.0 CS and 3.0 CSL—as well as the peerless, shark-faced E24 6 Series—in that we think two big doors are better than four smaller ones. However, the new M6 Gran Coupe makes a compelling case that for an oxymoronic four-door coupe, it looks pretty good. Especially when it’s going fast.

And fast is how BMW portrays them in its M6 promotional video. It starts with a lot of artsyness but eventually gets down to M6s on a track. Admittedly, the vast majority of new M6s will never find themselves on a track, but it’s still nice to see them there, if only in videos.

So which is slicker—the new M6 or the new M6’s promotional video? We’re voting for the car.—Scott Blazey
