BMW is on a roll, according to a list of new models on a dealer-product list leaked to Automobile. Upcoming models on the list include an all-wheel-drive 3 Series diesel wagon, a 5 Series with a twin-turbo diesel six, and the long-rumored 2 Series.
The document also lists a 228i, confirming that the 2014 two-door 1 Series will indeed be renamed to fit BMW’s new nomenclature. The car will share mechanicals with the European 1 Series hatchback, and will be powered by a version of the N20 turbo 2.0-liter I-4 found in the 3 Series. A six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic will likely be the 2 Series’ transmission choices. A sportier M235i is also in the cards, and could utilize the 320-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 of the Euro-spec M135i.
The 4 Series, which was shown off in concept form at Detroit, will be offered as a coupe and convertible, though the sheet suggests all-wheel drive won’t be available on drop-top models for 2014. Whether BMW plans to launch a direct competitor to the Audi A5 cabriolet remains to be seen. The 4 Series can be had in either 428i or 435i trim, and will likely share the 3 Series’ drivetrains.
Finally, the document reveals the third-generation X5 SUV will begin production at BMW’s Spartanburg, S.C. plant this August. The base X5 will come with the venerable turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6, offered in rear- and all-wheel drive, while a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 will be all-wheel drive only. Curiously, the X5M is missing. Whether that model is gone for good in unknown, but it might be replaced by the diesel-powered 381 bhp 546 lbs-feet European X5 M50d, which doesn't sound sexy, but should go well.––Paul Duchene
