German media report that the next generation of the BMW 5 Series will be offered with a three-cylinder engine.

It seems that the next-gen 5 Series, due in 2016, will be offered with a small three-cylinder turbodiesel producing 150 horsepower. In this configuration, the car would have a fuel consumption of 60 mpg U.S. or 72 mpg UK.

The new 5 Series will go on sale as a sedan in July 2016, and several months later, in November, the Touring will hit the market. Sometime in 2017, the Bavarian marque will introduce the much-criticized Gran Turismo derivative.

As you would imagine, the next generation of the BMW 5-Series will ride on a newly developed platform which will be introduced on the 7-Series programmed for a 2015 launch and will eventually underpin the next-gen 6-Series as well.

As far as the next M5 is concerned, Auto Bild mentions it will surpass  600bhp and will be the first M model to be offered with an optional all-wheel drive arrangement.Paul Duchene
