BMW has been caught testing the upcoming 2013 model BMW 6 Series Gran Coupe out on public streets once again. This time the prototype is showing more detail than ever, including new wheels and an exposed front end.
The Gran Coupe is BMW’s answer to the Mercedes-Benz CLS and the Audi A7 Sportback, showcasing a long elegant four-door coupe layout. The 6 Series GC will be based on the new 2012 model BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible, and is likely to be available in the same trim levels.
Engine variants are said to be similar to the BMW 6 Series, including the 3.0-liter turbo-diesel straight six—for the European market, at least—as well as a 650i-badged flagship variant sporting the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 gas engine.
The  Gran Coupe features a swoopy four-door layout with a extended raked rear window. The GC will also showcase very similar front-end styling to the normal BMW 6 Series, offering the pronounced vertical upper grille which seems to be a part of BMW’s new design philosophy. The 2013 model will go on sale sometime next year after being unveiled at one of the big international motor shows; we're betting on Frankfurt 2011, but they won't want to upstage the BMW 3i electric car or the new 1 Series, so it may appear later, perhaps not until 2012.—Paul Duchene
