Every once in a while, I have a brief affair—just a little one, nothing to really challenge my devotion and faithfulness, merely a minor deviation from the norm. A little tease. Hold on, don’t get excited; I’m still madly in love with—and holding on to—Mr. Right with both hands; it’s not that sort of affair.

Now I know why I can’t seem to reach anybody in the Southeast Atlantic region: They’re all packing their coolers for Road Atlanta, and Petit Le Mans, the season finale for the ALMS races. Bill Auberlen, who drives the #55 BMW Team RLL M3 GT, is quoted in the most recent press release, calling Petit Le Mans, “My favorite race in my favorite car.”

Twenty years ago this month, I first set foot in the United States—coming home to a place I’d never been before. I came as a tourist, with no intentions to remain here. The world, after all, is replete with tales of ugly-American stereotypes—loud, rude, ignorant, overweight—and I confess that I expected to meet those stereotypes.

There is nothing like the feeling of togetherness—you know, that warm, fuzzy feeling you get when you are surrounded by like-minded individuals, all sharing a common interest and bond: the camaraderie that comes from spending time with people like you, the togetherness you get when you and an old friend have zillions of old stories to tell, or new ones to make.
