The Facebook message I received in late May was interesting. It took me a while to see it, because messages from non-friends get put into an “other” folder which you have to remember to check. I do try and check it, because, well, if I don’t, I miss gems like this. The message, which I quote verbatim, as it is unbelievably sweet, said this:

One of the great aspects of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge is that it is multi-class racing; you have the Grand Sport (GS) class and the Street Tuner (ST) class. And in the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, you have Prototype (P), Prototype Challenge (PC), GT Le Mans (GTLM), and GT Daytona (GTD).

Last week I described how, after walking myself up the welding-equipment ladder and deciding that in order to fix the broken driver’s-side engine mount on Kugel, my ’72 2002tii, I needed to buy not only a welder but a a MillerMatic 211 MIG welder, I walked myself right back down when I calculated that by the time I bought the welder, the auto-darkening mask, the gas bottle, and the cart, I’d be laying out about $1,500—and that didn’t factor in the learning curve.

Admittedly, I get a little excited whenever I leave the service center of a dealership to take delivery of my BMW loaner while I have a car in for service. Typically, the loaner car will be a BMW I don’t own—and therefore a chance to conduct a prolonged test-drive of a late-model BMW.

Maybe it’s the heat this week in Boston—this ain’t the South, but, in the language of my people, I’m schvitzing—or my advancing decrepitude. Whatever the reason, I seemed to need some downtime after a very active few months, needed to take a break this week from hard wrenching.
