What makes a family road trip such a special event? Is it singing songs together late into the evening, or finding a fantastic local restaurant just outside of a small town? Does the glory of traveling involve learning new and amazing tidbits about your children and your parents? No.

I was all set to launch into my new thirten-part series on Conditioning The Shark (retrofitting air-conditioning into my Euro ‘79 635CSi) when someone gave me a free ’85 635CSi—which you have to admit is a pretty good opening line.

The year was 2010, one month to the day before my wedding. I had planned a much-needed reprieve from wedding-planning duties to attend a Northern Colorado BMW night with a small group of fellow Z3 M coupe and M roadster owners. Joining our group was a transplant from Seattle named Fletch, who had just acquired a pristine 2001 Estoril Blue M roadster.

After road trips in my ’72 Bavaria to the Vintage in 2014 and 2015, it was clear that, while the car was absolutely wonderful to drive a long distance, the suspension was kind of floaty and boaty, so I bought a set of Suspension Techniques sway bars to cut down on the body roll.

I give up. I never thought of myself as a quitter, but sometimes you just have to be honest with yourself, and this is one of those times. I have given up on my garage.
