I think it is safe to say that the last few months have been pretty crazy for me. As those of you who follow my career may already know, I have been working tirelessly to get behind the wheel of a race car again. Auto racing is a funny sport; although you do need the skill, having the money to race is really the major limiting factor for me right now.

When last we left my attempted windshield-gasket replacement, I tried the vaunted “rope trick,” then spent an hour manually “flipping the lip” with an improvised tool, because the rope trick isn’t always effective in very tight areas. Then I made the fatal error of taking a break for dinner.

BMW E30 3 Series are like rescue dogs: They have a habit of just showing up on my doorstep—sometimes literally. And like rescue dogs, I usually can't turn them away. The last three E30s I’ve owned have all come to me on their own.

One of the most annoying issues on the road trip home with Louie the 2002tii was the nearly catastrophic level of water intrusion through the windshield gasket. Although the windshield is in remarkably good condition—this is one of the reasons that I think the car has not 139,000 miles on it but 39,000 miles.

What a great time I had recently! It was “get ready for a road trip” day, and the vehicle tasked to carry us safely to relatives’ welcoming homes and beachside hotels and charming beds-and-breakfast inns was our standard cruiser: a 2016 BMW X5 35d, which we shall henceforth call “the X5” or “the X5 diesel.”
