Anybody know a good source to decode the Vin number on 2002's. Just bought another project and seller was not very helpful. Thx Jim

Just type it in at RealOEM.com. It will tell you everything about your car. Model, transmission, month of manufacture, market, etc. It's really cool. Unfortunately, what you will not get is the original paint or upholstery codes. You will NOT get production numbers, either.
RealOEM does NOT work for the old 7 digit VIN numbers most of the time. BMW started reusing the last 7 digits in their 17 digit VINs in the 80's.
My '87 325es comes up in the archive section. It doesn't give location of the plant it was produced at. Is there any way to figure out which plant it was by the VIN? Would that be listed on the car somewhere?
I happened upon a link today for decoding VIN: http://www.bmwarchiv.de/vin/bmw-vin-decoder.html The site claims to be able to give information from 1928 onward. Unfortunately, I get the same results using these two VINs - the lower number has no data, the higher one does. There is an ISO standard for VIN, starting from the early 1980's. One of the characters tells which plant the car was built in.
BMW started reusing some earlier numbers, so I wouldn't be surprised to see incongruous information if you have really early ones. Yes; the fourth letter indicates the assembly plant; i.e.: WBAD tells you that a 5 Series was built at Dingolfing.
