Wheel & TAll for one, or none for all?

As the owner of a 2000 323CI, I bought my car with 19" tires I loved the look and handling, but the ride was a little rough. So I opted for some 17" Breyton rims. Love 'em.
But i was wondering I look in all the classifieds and see everyone specifying tires for E90 or E46, or E30 etc. How much difference does it make or are there any differences between the rims for all these different models(also M model rims)? will a 2006 330I rim fit a 2000 323CI? etc. if not what size and lug pattern wheels can I use? I'm hoping that they are interchangeable.

Just looking for a good deal.
