Shift Knob

    On an '03 E46 M3, I am trying to remove the original shift knob to replace it with one that is more suitable for track use. I was told that the original is just pressed on the rod and that's just a matter of pulling it with force. I have tried & tried but it won't break loose.
    Does anyone know what the trick is?

    If it's like an E36 knob, grab and pull straight. I would not twist.
    Just be careful you don't hit yourself in the face or knock your mirror.

    Just curious, suitable for track use?
    What does that mean?

    It is made by Jaffster. It has an extension which raises the knob height and locates it closer to the steering wheel.

    I can see by having the shift lever closer to the steering wheel reduces the time between steering wheel and shift lever, but do you really think it will make a difference?

    Put the gearshift in 2nd or 4th gear so it's angled toward the back of the car. Grasp firmly with both hands and give a sharp tug in a straight line along the axis of the shifter lever. Do not twist. Do not put your face in the way. :)

    A firm yank usually works better than a steady pull. It takes about 90-100 lbf to release the catches from the retaining groove on the shifter. You might want to drape a towel over your hands and the shifter so that if you lose your grip, the knob won't become a projectile.
