    Use golf grip technique

Wrap a bit of double-face tape around the shift lever shaft. Wet the tape with lighter fluid (naptha) or similar to temporarily make the tape slippery. Slide on the shift knob and let sit overnight to let the lighter fluid dry.

Don't use too much tape (one wrap is probably enough) or else you'll have to cut the knob off when you want to remove it again.

Z4, correct? Your shift knob should be relatively new. Try to just put it back on and hit if hard a few times to settle it in. It shouldn't break anything unless the plastic is worn, but since a Z4 is a relatively new car, it shouldn't be the case.
