My 2002 325i (E46) service-engine-soon light came on and next to it, "EML". I have 105,000 miles on the car. Do I need to purchase a diagnostic scan tool to read the codes and reset the lights?? I believe they cost on the order of $150. Seems like a good investment, but I'm looking for advice. I do all my own maintenance, but have not had any lights come on before.
Generic code readers are not that useful- you need to spend real money to get the real info. Sounds like the EML went south. Common problem on those cars. The replacement part is like $6-$700 and is a bit of work to replace. The SIB states that you need to replace the harness too, but I had a customer volunteer to be a guinnea pig and not replace his harness. He is still happily chugging along over a year later.
