Possible Transmission Problem (I think)

The other day I was in rush hour traffic driving approximately 15 mph and heard a loud clunk from the rear of the car. It sounded like I ran over a branch or rock with one of the rear wheels - though I saw no hazards in the road. The car now drives and handles normally, but when the transmission is in drive and I slow to a stop the car vibrates, significantly, and is worst when at a complete stop. The excessive vibration does not occur with the transmission in reverse or neutral. There are no errors or problems indicated in the instrument panel. I am interested in learning what the problem may be, and if it is something I should pursue under the CPO warranty or seek an independent shop for diagnostics/repairs.

    Thanks for the help.

Hard to really diag that one over the internet but it could be a couple things. Transmission as you mentioned something internal may have broke causing the vibrations but kinda unlikely as the transmission is at a standstill when you are not moving and you said the vibration is worse while sitting still. My thoughts first would be to check the engine and transmission mounts. Those would cause the vibrations you are talking about and would be worse while sitting at idle not moving. Motors mounts are covered by CPO for failure, transmission I can't recall right off the top of my head but thats were I would start.

I appreciate it. I'm going to take it in for a diagnosis.

It is the engine mounts. The aluminum(!) bolts snapped. I also learned this is NOT covered by the CPO warranty and I am on the hook for $500 in mostly labor. I asked the service manager to request a 'good will' repair from BMW NA. Hopefully he will have success as I can't imagine bolts holding the engine are an item that should break at any mileage, particularly on a 2007 model with 77K miles that isn't driven hard.
