The seat belt indicator lamp remains illuminated and the signal alarm sounds continuously without anyone in the front passenger seat. It can only be turned off by engaging the seat belt. A diagnosis and repair solution will be much appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like your passenger seat mat is not reading properly any more and will require replacement.

I spoke to the local BMW approved upholstery shop abt replacing the seat mat. According to them, it could also be the seat belt (female) receptacle (?). In either case the seat will have be removed and likely the lower seat cushion cover. For the moment the problem occurs only intermittently. Reverting with outcome. Thanks.

Well if the seatbelt makes the light go away by clicking it into place then I highly doubt the female coupler is bad since the light goes off. Check with your local dealer there might be a extended warranty for that seat mat.
