One of the many festivals held at the Hunter Mountain Ski Area in Hunter, NY each year is Oktoberfest. More years ago than I would care to recall, our Chapter used to hold an annual tour to this event. This year, it was suggested that we do it again.

The Hunter Mountain Oktoberfest includes German and German-American entertainment within the picturesque setting of the Catskill Mountains. With any luck, we will be in peak foliage season, as well. There will also be a farmer's market, plentiful vendors and even crafts and pumpkin painting for the kids. Admission is free, so you can't beat that.

Our plan is to travel some really enjoyable back roads to get from CT to Hunter, NY. The tour will take us through the Berkshire area of Western MA and into NY. While the drive is less than 110 miles, it will take approximately 3 hours, due to the nature of the roads less traveled.

Our starting point will be at the Friendly's Restaurant on Rt. 75, in Windsor Locks, CT. We plan to meet there by 9:00 AM and leave by 9:20 AM. You will find directions to the start below. By leaving at this time, we should arrive at Hunter Mountain in time to enjoy lunch there, so there will be no lunch stop along the way. The route instructions will include a few suggestions for comfort stops along the way, if that becomes necessary.

Here are a few other things to consider. If you have any of those two-way Motorola type radios, bring them, as it will allow car to car communication, if necessary. Also, we have no organized plans to return home, so bring maps, an atlas or a Mapquest printout for those without navigation for their cars.

While we have no formal arrangements for those who may wish to stay over in the area, if you are considering staying Saturday night, here is a link to the Hunter Mountain lodging information, as found on their website:

Please RSVP if you plan to attend, so that we will have a head count prior to the event. We hope that you will be able to join us!

You would think they could come up with something better than that! Not very creative, those Germans?
