Hello, I failed emission tests (NOx at 25mph) with my supercharged 1998 540i and the friendly Dinan mechanic told me that I would have to replace BOTH cats, to the tune of $4000+ . The car has 97000 miles and runs like a top, but I have already moved on ('10 Merc E63...) and need to figure out what to do with this car. As I can figure it out, I have the following options: - Donate the car to charity and forget about it. . Any recommendations for a worthy cause ? - Find a local mechanic (any recommendations ? SF Bay Area) that does not charge $130/h and that can find some decent aftermarket cats (any recommendations ?) for not too much money, then sell it/trade it in for something else. - Can I sell a car that does not pass emissions ?
