I need your opinion. I'm considering replacing my OEM air filter with one of those Cold Air Intake systems with the chrome pipe and a K&N filter on the end. The manufacturer claims it will ad 5 to 15 more HP. My BMW mechanic tells me it is a big waste of time and money and could possibly harm my car. If you have one of these or have tried one, I would really like to know what you think of them. Thanks. Stephen King

Your BMW mechanic is correct. It is a waste of money.

Your OE MANN filters work just as well or better(long term)as that ricer crap. If you want more power, replacing the MAF and ECU chip would give you more power, in regards to airflow. Such as:

Although I don't think he makes one for the 540 or 530 V8's just yet.

There are other sure bets to gaining power with you 540. Emulating ricers is not one of them. Simple things like synthetic trans/diff and engine oil, with new fuel/oxygen/oil filters reduce friction. An EATS or Jim Conforti ECU chip will allow your car to run as it was meant to. 91 or higher octane with better gas mileage.

Beyond this, is forced air/supercharger systems/nitrous oxide/stupidity. Your engine life shortens with the latter configurations.
