Hello all. I have a 2002 745 Li and I an looking to get the updated maps for the navigation system. A friend has a 2008 550i and one of our friends suggested that I burn a copy his disc to see if it would work. I suspect that if it was that easy the discs would not go for $200 from NAVTEQ. Any insight in this area would be helpful.
Burning a NAV DVD Michael - I guess the question is, do you want to violate Federal laws regarding copyrighted material by burning a disc? Would you probably get away with it? Yes. Are the prospects of your being prosecuted by the FBI and the US Attorney low? Yes. Could you look at yourself in the mirror in the morning and tell your kids about it? You decide... NAVTEQ spends a lot of time and resources compiling the information which goes into the NAV disc. They hold the copyright. Perhaps I'm old-fashioned but it seems to me that stealing is stealing.
You are 100% right!!! It is aginst the law!!! Yes, you are correct. It would be wrong for me to break the law. I never even considered that part of it. It is a good thing for me that you just happened to come across my posting tonite. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction and saving me from a path of crime.
Nav update You could always take your service advisor at your local dealer to lunch, or better yet, a case of beer as a gesture of friendship (or a bribe) and STRONGLY hint how bad you need updated cd-roms and hope they offer to order them for you at a discount. (Incidentally, the 04 and newer Navigation CD is on DVD format whereas your model year is on CD rom). Since youre having to buy the entire set, I think theres 3 to 5 in a set, not sure, it would be best to spend your money more wisely at a dealer and get the correctly coded & operable versions to work in your car. If they dont OFFER a discount, asking them to arrange a discount at the parts counter isnt an unwise idea. Most of them will offer 10 to 20% off for a good customer experience and it doesnt cost them a dime to do it. This situation does beg the question though, with only 2 model years in the 7 series on CD-rom, how long will the CD-rom company or BMW continue to offer annual updates to the outdated cd-rom setup. Hmmm. Good luck either way, and avoid boot leg CD roms, as Ive a friend who tried it with an 03 745i, and his NAV reader hasnt been running correclty since, coincidence? Who knows, but he hasnt bother to have it repaired yet. Cheers!
Here is a practical approach You don't necessarily have to purchase the 2008 version of the maps - perhaps you would be ok with the 2006 version. Unless you are in an area that is really experiencing change, it's unlikely that having a 2-year-old version will have a tremendous adverse impact. I'm sure someone will have this available on eBay if you search for the correct part number.
