Recently, the warning lights for ABS and ASC illuminated, the speedometer stopped functioning, and the odometer stopped recording mileage. When I took it into a local repair shop, they diagnosed it as: ABS Fault Code: 30 Left rear wheel speed sensor. Bad ABS Control Unit. Estimated cost: approx. $1,200.00. Has anyone had a similar problem?
    Thanks

Hopefully you'll get a comment from someone who's had the same issue and a successful resolution. Assuming the computer diagnosis is correct, perhaps try replacing the wheel sensor first (presumably, less expensive than the ABS control unit) and re-checking. You might stand a chance of finding an ABS control unit on your car on EBay for way less than new, or, perhaps Programa could repair yours, possibly. However, seems a little odd that instrument cluster functions seem to be affected, which leads to the suspicion of other, undiagnosed wonkiness. Not sure why the ABS system would affect the speedo/odo.

If you can find the right wiring diagrams and decipher them, that perhaps might offer some insight -

I had to replace the ABS controller on my 2000 528i this summer and it wasn't cheap, $1200 is about right. The wheel sensors are a lot cheaper and fail often (ever year- 18months) so it's worth checking to see if that's your problem. In my case there were no issues with speedo/odo
