The horn in our M3/4 has become unreliable -- usually works fine, but sometimes not -- esp. when cold [PA winter here]. When malfunctioning, repeated pressing all around the center horn/airbag pad may get an occasional toot, but not for pressure in any particular location. My mechanic [a bimmer specialist] removed the airbag & cleaned horn contacts, but the problem remains. He suspects we may need a new steering wheel [ouch] but I'm not convinced. Why does is it usually ok?! Relay perhaps? Anyone out there had similar problem? Ideas?

I have the same problem on my 84 318i. I have removed the steering wheel a couple of times trying to fix it. I re-greased the contacts with metallic anti seize, which conducts electricity, but it made no difference. The horn does not work when it is really cold, but once the cabin gets warm the horn works fine. Very strange. My steering wheel has three horn buttons, there is no difference in which one I use.

No problem. I am in State College. Just moved here in Sept, before I was in Philadelphia. I have not done anything yet with the local chapter. Planning to this Spring sometime. Have you done anything with the chapter? If so, what events?
