Description

From the previous owner when I bought the car in 2022
Repair work wise…I replaced the water pump shortly after purchasing the car. I had a major tune performed by Munich Motorsports in Doraville GA in the early 90’s. The carb was overhauled along with new struts & shocks a few years back. A bit of history…I purchased the car from in November ‘85 from a Professor at North Texas in Denton. His name was Michael Spinelli. According to what Mike told me, he purchased the car new from a BMW motorcycle dealership in the Denton area and supposedly it was the first BMW automobile the dealership had ever sold. That said, I don’t have the paperwork on the original sale. When I asked him why he was selling it he said me he was moving to Salida Colorado & while he loved the car his wife (who wasn’t excited at all about the move) told him to sell the 1600 and buy her a 4 wheel drive Bronco so that was that.

After buying the car I kept it in Dallas for a while but soon realized the lack of an air conditioner meant the car had to go out West to my home state of NM. I drove it to Tijeras and the car lived w/my in laws. My father in law was a Citroen man & owned several sedans and a wagon. While an Engineer by trade he was also an excellent mechanic. He agreed to keep the BMW “in the family” so I sold it to him & the 1600 lived on the East side of the Sandia Mountains until I “bought it back” in Oct ‘90 & drove it all the way to Atlanta where it’s been ever since. I was a part owner in a Cessna back then & had it based at Peachtree DeKalb airport so the 1600 was parked in the hangar but after we sold that aircraft (2008) we’ve have kept the 1600 at our house in an covered but open car port.

Ive used the car sparingly just going to the local cars and coffee with my boys. It’s either been in the garage or more recently in the driveway under a cover in the shade. The car needs a new mechanical fuel pump which works but it’s in need of replacing. Overall it’s a very original car that would be a good choice to either completely restore or enjoy the experience as is.
