About three years ago, I was at a cookout and ran into a young man whose father was the owner of a suburban Boston-area restoration shop that was fairly well-known among BMW owners back in the day. My name is Chris and I have been numbers-free for eleven years. Maybe I’ve had a few lapses—snuck a peek at the latest complete list of manufacturers’ horsepower claims, and maybe a quick review of the fastest production car Nürburgring times. It’s hard to ignore all those juicy automotive tidbits flying around out there, especially for a former stats junkie like me.

As a driver who is always trying to improve, having a data system of some sort in the car is always a key component for me. In professional racing, we have all the highest-tech data systems that have sensors on every part of the car, reading and obtaining loads of information through every inch of the race track.
