When last we saw my Suburban, ’twas literally the night before Christmas. I had installed all of the new stainless-steel brake lines, and simply needed to fill it with fluid and bleed it. Unfortunately, when I added the fluid, I discovered that the cap on the Motive power brake bleeder I use for BMWs doesn’t fit the brake fluid reservoir on the ’Burb.

Early in September, my friend Andrew Wilson sent me a Facebook message recommending that I look at a post on the “2002 Fanatics” Facebook page. (As much as I may try, I can’t be everywhere at once, either physically or virtually, and this is not one of the pages I frequent.)

It is a common misconception that professional race-car drivers at the highest levels have a magic talent or secret trick up their sleeves to be as quick as they are, but in reality, whether you are racing at a club level or a pro level, in a race car or a street car, the basics of driving are the same for everybody. What is important is understanding the physics of it all, developing a feel for the limit, and executing it as well as you can.

I had hoped to be able to write this week’s piece about the triumphant completion of my replacement of the brake lines on my Suburban, a job of questionable worth that has occupied way too much of my time and pushed out all other projects.
