I give up. I never thought of myself as a quitter, but sometimes you just have to be honest with yourself, and this is one of those times. I have given up on my garage.

Two weeks ago, when I wrote about the drive I took up to Burlington, Vermont, in my E39 530i stick sport, and waxed rhapsodic on how much I’ve grown to like the car, I said that I’d driven up there “to have a look at a couple of cars.” I will now tell you what those were.

Not a word about the damn driving gloves. None of this is my fault. I am merely a victim of my own compulsion to live above my station: I own a collector car.

About three years ago, I was at a cookout and ran into a young man whose father was the owner of a suburban Boston-area restoration shop that was fairly well-known among BMW owners back in the day. The young man said that his dad was selling a package consisting of his partially-restored 3.0CSi project car, plus a parts car and a trove of new and used parts, and asked me if I could spread the information around.

My name is Chris and I have been numbers-free for eleven years. Maybe I’ve had a few lapses—snuck a peek at the latest complete list of manufacturers’ horsepower claims, and maybe a quick review of the fastest production car Nürburgring times. It’s hard to ignore all those juicy automotive tidbits flying around out there, especially for a former stats junkie like me.
