Last week, I dropped the teaser that I’d bought another car, literally on my birthday. I did buy a car—but that’s going to have to wait, because the Shark has new shoes. Wait, what?! Sharks don’t have shoes. Must be a better analogy than that. I’ll work on it.

It’s night now at the Pittsburgh International Race Complex. They call it Pitt Race for short, perhaps because “perk” was too cutesy for a manly race track, even though many excellent female racers drive here, too. For the first decade of its existence, the track was known as BeaveRun, but it has a new name and exciting new pavement.

Last Wednesday, I turned 57. Of course, you think I probably bought myself a car. In fact, I did—but that’ll have to wait until next week. This is about the present my wife, Maire Anne, gave me. It came wrapped in two packages. The first vaguely resembled an arm bone. The second shook like a box of wrenches. I unwrapped it.

Okay, I have a new favorite event. Who knew Pittsburgh could be so inviting? I mean, I will admit that the races in Pittsburgh had hardly crossed my mind, even though they have been staging vintage races in Schenley Park now for 33 years, and I knew that the Allegheny Chapter had a terrific corral there every year.

Let me begin by saying that I am stunned and flattered beyond words—well, almost beyond words—by all the e-mail I received about the “A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Vintage” series (fixing Brian Ach’s car that died on the way to The Vintage in Winston-Salem).
