In his famous collection of stories that became the book I, Robot, science-fiction writer Isaac Asimov introduced his Three Laws of Robotics. Law Number One states, “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.”

Last week we discussed run-down batteries. This week we’ll talk about a car’s charging system. That system consists of the alternator and the voltage regulator. The alternator puts out current at a higher voltage than the battery in order to satisfy the car’s electrical demands while keepin the battery fully charged.

Two weeks ago, blissfully, I had an afternoon off from work with neither kids nor wife with whom to share the day. Look, I love my kids and my wonderful wife, but I also like a rare slice of solitary pie; realistically, I get about three days each year that meet the solo criteria.

I received a bunch of e-mail about last week’s E39 battery story. Several people said that, with their club discount, they got a genuine BMW battery from their dealer for their E39 for about $200. Considering that Autozone’s price is $143 for their basic battery, and $207 for the “platinum,” that’s not bad.

In auto racing, so much goes on behind the scenes that doesn’t get shown to the fans by the media. Most of what the fans see are the drivers looking like “heroes” and the really cool race cars, but in reality, there are many people behind all of the action on TV doing a lot of work to make the cars go around the track. This is a team sport!
