“Be good—or at least be good at what you’re doing, even if it’s not good.” These are some of my favorite words of wisdom, words that have been passed down from generation to generation of the Weed family. Most of the time I’m pretty good at being “good,” but then again, when the decision to be good or not to be good comes along, I can rock bad pretty well, too.

In last week’s column, I’d seen a ’73 2002, formerly Inka, now steel gray, that hadn’t run in five or six years. I’d given it a cursory examination in the seller’s garage. In spite of the shabby exterior, the car had a rather appealing intact black interior, a mint Momo Prototipo steering wheel, and a pretty nice set of front grilles.

Last weekend, the San Diego Chapter held its annual high-performance driving school at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway. Since it was one of the first BMW CCA schools of the year, I thought it would be a great idea to head out into the desert and promote what the Club has to offer—and wouldn’t this be a great opportunity to review a car? Maybe the BMW 228i with the Track Handling package?

About a year ago, I spoke at a local Porsche Club event. Afterwards, a guy approached me, saying that he had a BMW 2002 in his garage that hadn’t run in about six years, and asking if I could help him figure out what it’s worth and what to do with it. “Sure,” I said, “just e-mail or phone me.” He never did, and I forgot about it—

Evil cell phones and even evil-er texting has triggered a national conversation on distracted driving, even though drivers have been distracted since long before cell phones were invented. As I was driving last week, listening to a guy on the radio talk about distracted driving—pause here for realization of irony—I discovered that food, beverages, loud music, and other deadly practices are now being targeted as driving distractions that must be legislated out of existence.
