With 2017 winding down, and with the automotive world perpetually looking several years down the road, it’s a good time to pause and assess what is approaching during BMW’s run up to 2020. There has always been the possibility of new technology disrupting the industry, and right now it feels more like a massive meteor strike is on its way, rather than something far more benign.

Three years ago, I was contacted by a gentleman I met when I spoke at a Porsche Club meeting near Boston. Turns out he had a 2002 that had been sitting in an unused garage for a decade, and wanted to know what the car was worth, and whether I was interested in buying it.

Winter is coming! So far it’s been an abnormally mild fall here in Colorado, with only a few light dustings of snow foreshadowing the cold and darkness that is to come. For auto enthusiasts short on garage space, this is an ominous time, as heated storage space becomes worth its square footage in gold.

I have a friend, I guy I know from my erstwhile professional life—detection of unexploded ordnance on formerly-used military training ranges; long story—who is a Chevy guy with a ’68 Camaro RS/SS. He lives down near Virginia Beach and is active in the vintage Chevy scene down there, helping to organize shows and cruise nights.

Thanksgiving comes this week, but I will refrain from posting the usual list of things for which I am thankful. I’d rather discuss how serendipitous it is when a bunch of my passions show up at in the same place at the same time. That time was a couple of weeks ago, and the place was the Oktoberfest Saturday-night gala in the Boeing Center of the National World War II Museum in New Orleans.
