what's the approximate auto trans replacement cost for an x5?

now that winter's well on the way I 've noticed an x5 locally with a shot auto trans - what would it cost to replace the thing?

If, IF, it is really a failed trans---and you should get another opinion about that---replacement will be big bucks. Most people would install a good used trans to save money. Go to www.car-part.com to looks for options there---about $2000 used in my area. Labor is about 13 hours. Service the trans while it's out? more hundreds. And then what else is wrong with it? Beware the V8 X5, it's the favorite vehicle of BMW shop owners! Even I can't afford to own one.
