My independent daughter insists it's OK to tie a Christmas tree to the roof of her X7 without a roof rack. Dumb. As I see it, a heavy wet tree laid on a sunroof is a recipe for a very expensive dealer repair bill. It would be interesting to know if there are any known max permissible weight specs for a (two-piece glass) sunroof.
I'd say whatever a small uhaul rental would be for a day or two would beat the risk of permanent paint/scratch damage, never mind the thousands-dollar potential risk damage to the roof. Small hassle, sure, but, you can jam any old tree in a whatever-size-needed uhaul with no damages or worry, never mind securing it for transport. If they don't have any experience with a taller vehicle, if that's what's needed, they just need to be reminded to watch tree branch/wire/roof/gutter clearances when navigating near the house or other places (in other words, look up when driving, maneuvering, & backing up too). We have an X7, we'd never do that to it or risk it.
