The steering seemed too stiff before the suspension work and bigger tires, now it's really stiff. Garage thinks it's the rack and pinion (power steering pump seems o.k., isn't making any noise). Bavauto want's 599.00 for new (ouch!). Found a rebuilt from rackworld on ebay for 140.00. Any of you had experience with this issue? I'm propably not going to try and install myself, but wondered if any of you have had this issue, and if a new rack and pinion fixed it. Also, I would think the steering on this sports car would be a little on the stiff side anyway, but I'm not sure. Thanks. Rock
I don't think it should be all _that_ stiff. A really nice upgrade for e30's, particularly for driver's schools (probably not spec legal for NASA Spec E30, SCCA auto-x/race, maybe forces a class change for BMWCCA club racing) is the zionsville autosport e36 rack conversion kit. A little more steering effort than stock, but less turns lock-to-lock! Check out the rest of the suspension as well - make sure your tie-rods, etc. are in proper shape, upper strut bearings, etc.- don't just assume it has to be the steering rack.
