So my 330ci 'vert has 105k on it and i have kind of a clunk when i turn the wheel back and forth. Real subtle and seems to resonate up through the column. The car has brand new control arms/bushings, struts/mounts, sway links and tie rods. Rack is original. I was curious based on preliminary searching, that my issue might be with this guy, the coupler/UJ: http://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E46-330Ci-M54_3.0L/Steering/Column/ES52449/ Anyone else have to replace this as well around these miles? I've also heard of inner tie rods coming loose at the rack?
Yes I have replaced the steering column u joint on a couple cars for a clunk sound and sticking causing to much effort intermittently. But of course make sure all your suspension and tie rods are tight. Yes inner tie rods can also cause a clunking noise if they are loose. Also check ball joints on the control arms to make sure they are not loose either.
Thanks! yeah the chassis is all nice and tight. I might replace that u joint to start and see if it goes away.
