    Greetings,

A piece of black trim around the driver's side view mirror has been broken off, in addition the body-colored cowling needs to be replaced on my E39. No damage to the mirror or metal frame that the miror is attached to.

I am seeking any advice on doing the work myself...

Can the trim and cowling be replaced w/o replacing the actual mirror and metal frame?
Is it a do-it-yourself type of project?
Any recommendations for finding the parts?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Similar problem

Mine is a 99 323is. The black paint on the mounting for both mirrors is peeling away. It looks like pot metal or aluminum under the paint. My friendly local BMW body shop guy says they can be removed and repainted, ie remove the mirror, repaint the mounting surface and replace the mirrors.
I know this doesn't help you because apparently there is a piece actually broken off of the mirror assembly. But the removal and replacement procedure will be the same. I think I know how to do it but I'm looking for confirmation.

    Best of luck
    David
