why doesn't bmw offer security system for 128i convertible? i was told it is only offered if ordered and installed at factory seems strange that they send cars to dealers with red light/sensor on rear view mirror but yet you can not purchase a system to activate this feature !!. any thoughts or suggestions as to what i might be able to do as to piece of mind from a security standpoint - frustrated new owner

Security system is a dealer-installed option. Costs probably $750 or so. However I believe that BMW cheaped out and you can't get the motion detector stuff unless ordered from the factory. Check again with the dealer.

That's correct. As a cost-saving measure BMW no longer installs pre-wiring for options that, previously, could be installed at the factory or by a dealer. For some models and options, retrofits are still possible albeit at substantially increased cost over the old way (due to the cost of the harness and an eye-watering amount of labor to install it).

It might also be part of BMW's ongoing push to change US customers' buying habits and motivate people to custom-order their cars (like the rest of the world), rather than buy them off the lot.
