Any advice on how often to change out PS Reservoir. Understand the filter for the PS pump is in the reservoir unit and cannot be changed without replacing the reservoir. Correct?? Need some advice on this. thx
You're showing three vehicles. Which one are you inquiring about You can consult realoem.com (or I can do it to help out). Because BMW makes constant running changes on these cars (they don't necessarily wait until the next model year to change parts and specs), I will need either the last 7 digits of your VIN number or your production date (stamped on a label on the driver's side door jamb) to make sure that realoem.com pulls up the correct part for your car.
Thanks, NottheStig. The production date would have helped too, but here goes. Crud! HUH! I know what they look like: cylinder shaped, usually made of foam or paper. Not on this car apparently. I will search some more and return to this thread. On the other hand, oembimmerparts.com sells a replacement reservoir with cap for $27.50. That's almost $40 cheaper than the realoem price. Just make sure they understand this is a reservoir for the M62 V8 and not for the six. I don't know if they're different, but the site makes no distinction on that http://www.oembimmerparts.com/catalog/item/4168850/4086432.htm
On the E46, the filter comes with/within the reservoir - not available separately. I'm not sure the same is true with the E39.
PS reservoir change interval Sorry guys!!! You are correct, I am referencing the 540i 6spd with 87k miles Any thots on how often to change out the PS reservoir ??? thx again
There is no service interval for reservoir. If it's not leaking, leave it alone. Your power steering fluid on the other hand, does need periodic changing. I found a webpage for doing this on an E46. The process for an E39 should be similar. http://www.impee.co.uk/powersteering_fluid_change.htm
The filter is built into the reservoir. Im changing mine this weekend along with the 2 hoses and fluid. You might as well change the hoses since they are prone to leaking. Make sure to buy clamps and the washer for the pump side of the lines.
The oil carrier (reservoir) part number is the same for the E46 330Ci and the E39 540i. ( at least using the 02-2003 production date) 32411097164
