Hi I have a 2013 135i I live in Fort Lauderdale Florida. About a month ago now I left it sitting outside my friends house on December 15th 2017 for about 5 hours. When I got back I got in the car to go eat and when I tried to start it the ignition turned on and a warning light with a gear and a ! In the center showed up so I turned it off and back on and when I did that everything in the car shut down accept for the headlights tail lights and dome lights. So I had it towed to Vista BMW in pompano Beach. It’s been almost a month now and they can not figure out the problem with the car. It is currently being shipped to the United States BMW headquarters in South Carolina for another specialist to take a look at it. The car only has 34k miles on it and it just died. Has anyone ever herd of something like this happening or no how to fix it/ if they can’t fix it does it get totaled or what happens. Someone please help. Thanks

I don't know, although you might hit up the club ombudsman, who might have some insight, possibly. I've heard of the rare instances such as yours where whatever's wrong has all of BMW scratching their heads. though. The complexity of these modern car's electronics unfortunately means that despite all testing, it's impossible to account for all possibilities of how the car's systems can interact & go haywire. That's not an excuse, it's just a reality these days. I hope they get it solved though so you can get your car back!

This is hard to say without fault codes (if able to talk to the car) or more information. I have had issues before with a couple cars being completely dead from a module called a JBE (junction box electronics). I am sure the dealer and BMW has looked into something like that. Do they have any ideas into a possibility of the issue?

You just need a very good electronic tech at bmw to try and diagnose . I wish you luck and hopefully
They have such a person in SC. Note USA headquarters for BMW NA is in NJ. You could also try one of the N54/ 55 bmw forums to see if anyone else had had the same Issue. But know you will get a lot of guessing. Most likely
They will get you a new DME and or wiring harness to fix. I have never see s this and have 135i N54 and several M cars and handy with or experienced many issues in the past but with a good code reader and a sharp experienced BMW Master Texh have been able to solve those issues. Again good luck !!!

Gear position sensor. There should be two. They are on or near your transmission. At least that's what it was when my car did the exact same thing. But good luck I hope you got your car back by now. I posted this for future viewers that may have this issue and look on here for an answer.
PS. When this happens the computer don't not throw any codes.
