What to look for in a 03 or 04 Z4. Price range is 12 to 14k. I know I'm not going to find a low milage mint Z4 but some I saw with 60 to 80k miles with the right price. What do I need to pay close attention to. Thanks for any help, Marcus

    Look for low mileage

The problem with many of these cars is that they have come in off lease. . . and we are never sure that lease "owners" are as fanatical about maintenance as those who know we will be stuck with our cars for a long, long time. . . .

That means you want to see the service records. Yes, they've been given BMW's free maintenance, but those oil-change intervals are a bit long for comfort for some of us. And unless it's an M car, I don't think they even do the 1,200-mile break-in service---oil, transmission oil, differential oil---that I consider essential to longevity.

If you buy a Z4 2.5i, you will always wish it were a Z4 3.0i. If you buy a 3.0i, you'll wish you had held out for the 3.0si. That's the one that meant BMW had no need for an M model. . . a couple of years before they came out with the Z4 M roadster.

I quite like the 3.0si, and was in search of one when I came across my car. Whatever you buy, make sure it has the sport package unless you just want it for boulevard cruisin'. That package is already in the 3.0si and (of course) the M roadster.

    Good luck in your hunt!
