Key programming / Alarm switch?

    Hi,

Myself and a friend have tried repeatedly to reprogram the keys to my 1999 e39 without success. We have two keys and at least one seems functional.

The other day I noticed that there is a switch just forward of the cabin filter on the drivers side that has broken off and is just dangling down. I theorize that this might be part of the alarm system and perhaps the fact that is is damaged or stuck in the "open" position might be causing issues with our efforts to program the keys.

Testing this theory seems easy enough, but the car isn't here at the moment and so I thought I'd post on this before I forgot.

    Thanks,

    Phil
