On my 2008 528i (Mfg. 01/2008), I usually experience a 5 - 10 minute delay for the Navigation system to properly identify the cars correct position. This only happens if the car has not been run for approx. 8 hours. If car is turned off for less time, Nav. properly locates the car almost immediately after screen gets past warning message. If map view is turned on, the car's location is off the travelled road by some distance. Altitude is also not displayed, until system locks in. If car is taken over exact same road after Nav. is "warmed up", car location (and Altitude) is reported correctly. I am curious if anyone has had a similar issue with their BMW Nav. system. Local BMW dealer was able to duplicate the problem by having the car overnight, said they fixed it, however, problem still exists. Another strange problem, sometimes the volume control, iDrive selector, etc. do not work after the car is started. This lasts only a very short time, maybe a minute but is annoying, for a $55k car. My 2005 530i never had this problem. Also, my wife's 2008 Lexus RX350 Nav. system works correctly - instantly. Anyone with similar problems or ideas?
No question that there is a problem. It would be helpful for us to know what the dealer stated that he fixed the first time around.
BMW Dealer did not supply a copy of the work order - I was just told it was fixed. And as I had indicated, if the car has been run within the last few hours, Nav. does work normal. So when I picked up the car, nothing wrong. When the location is off the map and the street name is not being shown, the actual latitude & longitude position appear to be shown correctly, it seems to be that the processor just can't handle the data correctly. The first "test" to attempt a fix of the problem, was that the Dealer salesman switched out the Nav. DVD for me - no effect. I would really like to have an idea of what could cause this problem, as it is inconvenient to take the car to the Dealer, leave it over night, only to have them not be able to correct the problem. It is not a serious problem, but it is annoying. Someone at the BMW electronics group, should understand what the problem is, but the ability to get to that person is beyond the grasp of us mere mortals. I just find it hard to believe that I am the only person to have this problem. Again, it never happened on my 2005 530i, so I know this problem isn't typical. Thanks for any insight that you might have.
Is there a 100% failure rate if the car is not used for 8 hours or so (i.e. overnight)? If so, the only thing you can do is take it back to the dealer. It sounds like a module is going to sleep and not starting up properly. But the dealer has to be told that they have to test it AFTER the car sits for the specified period of time. In addition, you should demand a full explanation of what was fixed last time.
