What an absolute pleasure it is for me to join such a group of enthusiasts! This may be a bit lengthy of a thread, but I am searching for some input on an upcoming decision. I currently own a 2006 330i. It has been a fantastic vehicle! However, I am looking to trade out of it soon. My brother has a 1999 M3 Convertible, and my parents have a 2000 740iL. They were both lucky enough to do Euro-delivery and take their vehicles out on the "open road" to let them loose. I was not as fortunate. Nevertheless, I am a proud owner, and have enjoyed these vehicles for years. Both my brother & parents are still very happy with their purchases 15 & 14 years later! As mentioned, I am looking to trade out of my 2006. However, what I am looking for comes with some "devil's advocate" feelings, and I'm hoping some of you may share your options/experiences in regards to my dilemma. I would like to purchase a 840/850! This vehicle has been taunting me for over 20 years, and I have finally decided to try and pull the trigger on it. While I did not have $75k to spend back in the 90's, the thought of being able to finally own one these magnificent E31 models has me endlessly searching for the "right" one. In doing so, I have read many of the threads and forums but they all seem to be a little outdated due to not many people actively pursuing this model. So... I could sure use some help with a few questions, and appreciate all the input. 1.) Size... I am 6'4" and roughly 295-315lbs. While I fit comfortably in my E90, I would like to know the E31 is going to offer the same type of headroom/legroom. According to the specs, I should be in the clear. Again, just verifying. The closest one to my location (Oklahoma) is 400+ miles away. Therefore, it's kind of tough to go "check it out". 2.) 840 or 850?? I have read forums and reports pertaining to both. This vehicle is going to be my daily driver. While I would prefer to own the V12, it seems the "safer" bet is the V8. There are numerous YouTube videos showing both stock & modified versions of both engines. I really do like the V12 sound! 3.) Maintenance... By the time I make this purchase, I will be prepared to put "some" money into the car if the repairs are basic (i.e. Brakes, Rotors, etc...). There is a shop nearby that has worked on these, as well as a dealership that works on 1-2 every so often. There just are not that many around. Any suggestions on finding a reputable mechanic in a town other than my own to do an inspection where the car to be purchased is located? How do I know I'm being done right? 4.) Longevity... Obviously, the newest model I can find would already be 17 years old (1997). Is this vehicle, with all of it's stunning looks, going to be something that will run for another 10+ years with the appropriate maintenance? Thank you for anyone that made it this far into the post. I do appreciate your thoughts while I look to complete a dream 20+ years in the making. Sincerely, Brian
Welcome! You, sir, are a braver individual than me - I lust after them but am just too used to the reliability of less complex 3-series for my daily driver. I wish you the best of luck!
I wish it were purely lust... It's dedication. No matter what technology comes from the Roundel & Co., I belive this was the most incredible vehicle to leave the factory, and I am intent on owning a piece of history!
They are a really cool car in many ways and most the technology was way ahead of it's time but with that being said they do have there very big electrical problems that cost a lot to track down and fix. I would make sure you have some one look at the car that knows these very well before purchase. The one's I have worked on always had a laundry list of issues needing fixing. The v12 or v8 either are ok to own. Just remember the v12 will cost more in maintenance than a v8 and repairs are more of pain to do as well. They are a tight fit in the cabin for me at 6 ft 180 lbs. Make sure you do your research before jumping on one of these they can be great or a really big night mare.
Thank you for the feedback. My biggest problem is that there simply aren't any nearby for me to go see/sit in and really look at. After what I have continued to read, I may be leaning toward a 2008+ M5, or a 750/760Li. Tough to choose with so many wonderful vehicles out there, but the E31 has just had my attention for so long.
The other ones I would say are better but are also very expensive vehicles to own. M=money trust me on that one. Depending on which one your looking at for 750 or 760 they also have some expensive repairs that you need to watch out for. But all are amazingly fun car when they are running properly. Let us know if you any assistance.
