I have had the unfortunate issue of having my rear view mirror fail in my M3. The auto dimming liquid in betwen the mirrors has failed causing no auto -dimming and a large bubble right in the middle of the mirror to form. http://www.radar-mirror.com/Mirror_Repair.html Luckily I called a company (Sybesmas Electronics) who told me to REMOVE THE MIRROR IMMEDIATELY as the liquid is HIGHLY caustic and will leak out ruining the plastic around the mirror and anything it drips on inside your car. Why BMW has not recalled this for repair is beyond me. It seems it's a lawsuit waiting to happen. Unfortunately Sybesmas sent me the repaired mirror with a scratch on the outside of the mirror which meant another round of shipping and waiting. The whole process took over a month. I used the instructions at Radar-Mirror (who also does mirror repair) to remove the mirror (a simple process).http://www.radar-mirror.com/BMW_Mirror_Removal.html
I've had two mirrors fail on my 2004 M3 convertible. The second one was not underwarranty; the bubble was there, and yes it had leaked onto the console. But I just wiped it off and left the mirror. Dealer wanted $675 to replace it. Didn't seem worthwhile.
